This book was for a long time the one in depth comprehensive book about the UFO phenomenon available at the local library in the Danish town where I grew up, and functioned as my introduction to ufology I would still recommend it as such The large format also results in place for lots of high quality colour illustrations. As one can guess from the title, John and Anne Spencer wrote Fifty Years of UFOs in 1997 This year was not just 50th anniversary of the Kenneth Arnold sighting and the Roswell Crash but also the height of X Files mania and the year the film Men in Black premiered in theatres In other words the high water mark of the UFO conspiracy subculture s crossover to the mainstream No surprise, then, that every chapter covers a 10 year timespan from 1947 onwards leading up to the 90 s There is also a surprising amount of openness from the authors to New Age concepts that were popular in the 1990 s, or at least connecting them to the UFO culture at large which is in sharp contrast to the popular interpretation UFOs as nuts and bolts alien spaceships The optimistic Zeitgeist of the 1990 s also looms large over the style and tone of the book. When I re read Fifty Years of UFOs this summer I was also struck by how obvious it is that both authors are British The most obvious manifestation of this Britishness is the page space is spent on UFO sightings from the UK that are not particularly well known at large in the rather US centric UFO culture The resulting cultural distance, however, also means that the authors are rather critical of much American UFOlogy As a result they quite effectively criticize how easily US ufologists fall for deliberate misinformation and intentional hoaxes, as well as the UFO culture s evolution tied up in the US collective national neuroses that shift according to the evolving Zeitgeist. This is one overall difference between the US and UK approaches to ufology that I have noticed, by the way The Americans tend to take things literally, as they either interpreting UFOs as extraterrestrial visitors in nuts and bolts spaceships or if something exotic, they do something like Whitley Strieber who views his visitors as the same spiritual guides that accompany shamans on their vision trips but taking the guise of modern culture s standard depictions of preterhuman beings The point that I am trying to make here is that Strieber, for all his openmindedness, is still convinced that there are literal nonhuman entities visiting him British authors, however, like John and Anne Spencer here are open towards treating ufology as folklore or religion and study it from the perspective of how it evolves as a set of cultural narratives reflecting the surrounding society at large.
