First of all, I have to say that Dean is a master when it comes to capturing the authentic voice of the raw, rough edged people he is writing about The dialogue, descriptions, observations everything rings true It s rare to see SUCH dedication of an author to the people he is writing about fiction or no This authenticity actually gave me a bit of trouble, though this is no fault of the author s Dean so perfectly captures these characters and their disturbing situations that it was painful to read in many parts I think the raw cruelty of these characters, combined with a young teenage narrator, was impossible to take lightly and it hit a little too close to home for comfort Again, this is not a fault, but rather a compliment towards how well the author is able to render a picture of these characters and their lives There were some issues with proofing as well, some words left out, etc., that I found distracting, but this doesn t take away from the power of the story Overall, if this is your genre dark, gritty, tough characters in less than glamorous situations, told with deep introspection then I certainly wouldn t miss out on Far Beyond the Pale I m very much looking forward to what Daren Dean gives us next.

Far Beyond the Pale , by Daren Dean, introduces readers to Nathan Kimbrough, known to most as Honey Boy or The Kid He s 13 years old in the mid 1970s, and he and his mother have just returned to Fairmount, Missouri, his mother s birthplace, after drifting for years as his mother falls in love with one bad man after another Honey Boy doesn t know who his father is because his mother won t tell him, but he soon re establishes friendships with the Vaughn boys, who are all headed for no good in a hurry Chief among the Vaughns is Elston, easily the worst man in the County when, for some reason Elston decides to make Honey Boy his apprentice, it s up to the youngster to figure out whether his future will lead him to heaven or to hell There s a lot to like in this novel the writing is evocative of a place and time, and the story about a youngster struggling to grow up and figure out his place in the world is a universal, and universally compelling, tale I had some trouble with some of the characters, particularly Elston who is, indeed, far beyond the pale it s sometimes a struggle to get through a novel with so many unpleasant people in it But I liked Honey Boy and his friends, and since he s on just about every page of the book, it was helpful to focus specifically on him to offset the wicked characters This was an e book advance reader copy, and as I ve noticed and with e books, there are a number of dropped words, misspellings and the like my favourite was a line in which the word was obviously meant to be face, as in saving face, but the word used was faith, pretty funny in a novel that includes a whole lot of religious talk and action I hope the publisher can pass it through another proof reading session because of that problem, but I did find it a good read even with that annoyance Recommended

Dean describes a sometimes sinister and claustrophobic world, Mayberry as directed by David Lynch, punctuated with and sometimes punctured by his wry humor A coming of age tale crossed with Village of the Damned that draws power from a strong current of affection and sadness for its characters.

Nathan Honey Boy Kimbrough finds himself stalking the family tree with an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other It s a boy s coming of rage, a Missouri noir set in the 70s, about a boy lost and walking a line betwixt violence and redemption Brilliant passages of descriptive elan marks Far Beyond the Pale as the gothic and grotesque kin of Flannery O Connor and William Gay.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.I ll start off by saying my only real complaint probably has nothing to do with the book I got an.epub version and converted it to.mobi I m not sure the conversion went well, as full sentences were re created in other areas which really through off my reading rhythm I think with some editing and proofreading, this would be good to go, if it wasn t my conversion.I don t normally read the inside covers or summaries, in the case of e books before I read I like to be surprised Far Beyond the Pale is about a boy named Honey Boy aka Nathan who is dragged all around by his fairly pathetic mother before ending up back in their home town in Missouri Honey Boy s mom is one of the can t keep a job, shacks up with women beating idiots type of person, who often just up and leaves Honey Boy at Aunt Oleta s when she either needs a break, is feeling frisky or is outrunning the law Or all of the above. In the town of Fairmont, we re introduced to the local color The colors are red neck and white trash and there really isn t a redeemable character among them Roy, at the gas station, is fairly decent to Honey Boy, especially in the midst of the upheaval and drama his mama created, but even then, Roy is terrified of the local moron trash tough outlaw Vaughn, so Roy doesn t do a lot of standing up.Honey Boy is just a confused thirteen year old boy, no dad, no prospects and no good role models He goes on vandalizing sprees with Vaughn, steals with Vaughn and almost seems to look up to this lout Honestly, the story just made me angry While my town isn t quite like this, it s close People of my town could watch Gummo and could recognize it They could read this novel as well and recognize the characters on the street Which is exactly why I believe this made me angry While some things shake out in the end, reading Honey Boy s inner torment as he tries to be good while being around so much evil, trying to love a mother who just isn t there, and trying to not care about the man who is his dad oh yes, that s revealed is just heartbreaking.

This book made me angry It s the story of a young boy who wants to do the right thing but has terrible role models and no one to turn to He lives in the midst of religious white trash and even the law isn t there for him It s a completely hopeless, depressing situation and it s no wonder he wants to take his gun and shoot someone I want to shoot someone just reading it It rambles on in spots and could definitely use some proofreading and editing I got an early e book copy but is a good coming of age tale about life in 1970s backwoods Missouri.

  7. says:

Wonderful, lyrical novel about boyhood and growing up in backwoods Missouri This redneck kid is smart, insightful, and has a big challenge if he is to prosper But the reader feels he will overcome the meanness in his surroundings and in the people he associates with.
